Pain and Structural Conditions

Discover effective solutions for pain and structural conditions through our targeted and comprehensive treatment approaches, designed to address the root cause and promote lasting relief.

  • Arthritis/Joint Pain

Arthritis encompasses a range of joint disorders characterized by inflammation in one or more joints. With over 100 distinct types of arthritis, the most prevalent form is osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), which can be caused by joint trauma, infection, or aging. Individuals with arthritis often experience joint pain resulting from inflammation surrounding the joint, damage due to the disease, daily wear and tear, muscle strains from forceful movements against rigid joints, and fatigue. Tread Well offers consultation, advice, and off-loading shoes or orthotics to alleviate arthritis and joint pain.

  • Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscle to your heel bone on each leg. Tendonitis is characterized by inflammation or swelling in this tendon, which can result from overuse, tight calf muscles, inadequate footwear, or engaging in a new activity that strains the Achilles in an unfamiliar manner. Various treatment options for this condition include Orthopedic Shoes, Custom Foot Orthotics, Active Release Techniques (ART), Laser Therapy, and Ultrasound Therapy. Treatments include ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, active release therapy (ART), taping, stretching, orthotics, and proper footwear.

  • Back/Knee/Ankle Pain

The human body is a complex system with interconnected parts. Weaknesses in one area can quickly impact other regions as the body tries to compensate and adapt. For instance, an injury causing a slight limp may lead to pain in the ankles, knees, and back. As foot specialists, chiropodists possess the expertise to evaluate the biomechanical functioning of the body in motion. By analyzing a patient's gait and conducting a thorough examination, they can devise a treatment plan that targets pain sources and enhances overall health. Alleviate pain with orthotics and appropriate footwear.

  • Bunions

Bunions are a deformity characterized by the "big toe" appearing to be permanently bent sideways towards the other toes. This condition is commonly believed to result from wearing improper footwear, particularly shoes with pointed toes. Bunions are often accompanied by hammer or claw toes. In numerous cases, orthopedic footwear or custom foot orthotics can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with bunions. Tread Well provides footwear, orthotics, splints, bracing, ultrasound therapy, and laser therapy for bunions.

  • Corns & Calluses

Calluses are thick, hardened areas of skin that form due to consistent rubbing or pressure over an extended period. On the feet, this can happen due to friction from ill-fitting shoes or jobs that involve significant amounts of walking and running. Corns are a specific type of callus that develop with a hard "seed" at the center, resulting from the rubbing pattern. Even after removal, corns and calluses can reappear if the rubbing and pressure persist. Common treatments for corns and calluses include removal as part of our routine foot care and custom foot orthotics designed to redistribute the pressure.

  • Diabetic Foot

Individuals with diabetes encounter extra challenges in maintaining healthy feet. For example, they are more susceptible to leg and foot infections and have slower healing rates, which can lead to ulcers and, in severe cases, gangrene and amputation. Diabetic foot patients may also experience numbness and vascular damage.

Addressing these challenges requires diligent foot care and appropriate education. Tread Well offers comprehensive assessments, including checks for wounds, cuts, infection sources, and blood circulation in the feet.  Routine foot checks, including corn and callus removal, nail clipping, pulse checks, footwear, and orthotics. Additionally, we educate patients on the specific effects of diabetes on their feet and how to properly care for them.

  • Flat Feet

Flat feet, also referred to as "fallen arches" or "pes planus," is a condition where the foot lacks an arch, causing almost the entire sole to touch the ground while standing. Arches enable the foot to support the body's weight and create space for elastic soft tissues in the foot, which act as protective springs during high-impact activities like running and jumping. A chiropodist can evaluate the arches of the feet as part of routine care. Pain, discomfort, or injuries resulting from flat feet can be addressed using orthopedic shoes, custom orthotics, and other treatment options.

  • Hammer/Claw Toes

Hammer toes and claw toes are conditions where the toes become permanently bent due to deformities in their bones and/or tendons. These issues can arise from keeping the toes in a bent position for extended periods, often due to ill-fitting shoes. Hammer and claw toes frequently occur alongside other conditions, such as bunions. Discomfort related to these conditions can be relieved through the use of well-fitting orthopedic shoes and custom foot orthotics.

Other Foot Conditions

Explore our range of treatments for various foot conditions, tailored to provide relief, improve comfort, and promote overall foot health for enhanced daily living.

  • Athletes Foot

Athlete's Foot is a widespread fungal infection that affects the feet. The fungus thrives in communal areas like public showers and grows in warm, moist environments, such as inside shoes. As the infection progresses, the affected skin may become itchy, scaly, and flaky. In some instances, blisters and cracking may appear, causing pain, swelling, and potentially leading to secondary bacterial infections.

Preventing Athlete's Foot involves keeping the feet clean, dry, and exposed to air, as the fungus requires both heat and moisture to survive. While the condition may resolve on its own, it can also be treated with topical and oral medications. Receive consultation, advice on self-care, and recommendations for antifungal sprays and over-the-counter solutions to treat athlete's foot.

  • Fungal Nails/Thickened Nails

Fungal nails, or onychomycosis, represent the most prevalent type of nail disorder. Affected toenails may appear thickened and discolored, ranging from shades of yellow, green, white, or black. If left untreated, the nails can become brittle and prone to cracking. As the fungus continues to spread, the toe may experience inflammation and significant pain around the nail.

Various methods can be employed to remove the fungus as part of our routine nail care service at Tread Well. We also offer Fungal Free Nails (FFN), a topical product available for purchase that can effectively treat fungal infections. Debride and file down nails, over-the-counter or prescription lacquer, laser therapy (Cutera GenesisPlus), and photodisinfectant therapy (Clear Toe Therapy).

  • Heel Pain/Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is the connective tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, supporting its arch. Plantar fasciitis refers to the inflammation of this tissue, often resulting from overuse and stress. This condition is also known as "Policeman's Heel." If left untreated, it can become extremely painful and challenging to manage. Heel spurs, which are excess bone growths on the heel, can cause similar painful symptoms as plantar fasciitis. Tread Well offers a variety of services to address plantar fasciitis and heel pain, including orthopedic shoes, custom foot orthotics, ART, acupuncture, laser therapy, and ultrasound therapy.

  • High Arches

High arches, or "pes cavus," represent a condition that is essentially the opposite of flat feet. Feet with high arches have a significantly pronounced mid-foot arch, which can cause pain and potentially lead to other issues such as Achilles tendonitis. The causes of high arches can be both genetic and acquired. Similar to flat feet, high arches can be managed with proper care, custom foot orthotics, and orthopedic shoes that provide support for the arch. In the most extreme cases, surgery may be considered as a treatment option.

  • Ingrown/Infected Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the toenail grows in a manner that cuts into the toe itself. If left untreated, this condition can become extremely painful. Ingrown toenails can affect one or both of the outer corners of the toenail or even the entire leading edge of the nail. Common causes include improper nail care practices or ill-fitting shoes that exert downward pressure on the toenail. Infections caused by bacteria can lead to inflammation and swelling, which may also result in ingrown toenails. Tread Well offers a variety of treatment options for this condition, ranging from routine nail care to in-office toenail surgeries and antibiotics.

  • Plantar Warts

Plantar warts typically appear on the soles or toes of the feet. Over time, these warts can become painful, form mosaic clusters, and spread. They often present as small lesions resembling cauliflower, with tiny black marks beneath the surface at the center. The virus responsible for plantar warts can spread through direct contact or shared surfaces, such as public pool decks and shower floors. To remove warts, the process involves shaving or filing down the wart and chemically destroying its "root" to prevent recurrence. Depending on the severity of the wart(s), this procedure can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to achieve permanent results.

  • Sprain/Strain

Sprains and strains are related injuries that affect ligaments and muscles, respectively. Ligaments are fibrous structures connecting bones within a joint, and a sprain occurs when a ligament is overstretched, resulting in a partial or complete tear, often in the wrist or ankle. Similarly, a strain happens when a muscle is overstretched and tears. Both sprains and strains typically cause pain, swelling, and potential bruising. In severe cases, the joint may become unstable, and the affected limb may be difficult to move or use.

The initial treatment for sprains and strains is RICE therapy – Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Minor cases should heal independently with proper care and precautions. For chronic sprains, custom foot orthotics can help promote optimal ankle alignment, reducing the strain on damaged tissues. We use ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, taping, exercises, footwear, and orthotics for sprains and strains.
