Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Burlington
A painful, red or swollen nail edge is often an ingrown toenail. Our Chiropodists offer same-visit relief and in-office nail surgery for recurring cases.
Understanding the condition
About ingrown & infected toenails
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail presses into the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation and sometimes infection. It most often affects the big toe. Mild cases can be relieved by carefully removing the offending nail spike. Where ingrown nails keep returning, a partial nail avulsion permanently narrows the nail so it can no longer grow into the skin.
Common symptoms
- Pain along the side of the toenail
- Redness and swelling of the nail fold
- Pus, drainage or an overgrowth of tissue
- Pain when pressure is applied or in shoes
- Recurring flare-ups on the same toe
Common causes
- Cutting nails too short or rounding the corners
- Curved or naturally wide nails
- Tight footwear or toe injury
- Sweaty feet softening the skin
- Inherited nail shape
How we treat it
Our approach at Tread Well
01
Conservative nail care
The ingrowing spike is carefully removed to relieve pressure, and you are shown how to trim and care for the nail at home.
02
Partial nail avulsion
For recurring ingrown nails, a narrow strip of nail is removed under local anesthetic, with a chemical applied to stop that edge from regrowing.
03
Aftercare and follow-up
We provide dressing instructions and review healing to reduce the risk of infection and recurrence.
