Procedures
What toenail surgery involves
Registered Chiropodists in Ontario hold full scope of practice for minor surgical procedures of the foot, including nail surgery, local anaesthetic and prescriptions.
Nail surgery is one of the specialty treatments offered as part of chiropody care, following an assessment by a Registered Chiropodist. About chiropody treatment
Ingrown toenail care
An ingrown nail occurs when the nail edge presses into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling and sometimes infection. Assessment establishes the cause, which may include nail shape, footwear pressure or previous trauma.
Partial nail avulsion
Where only the offending border is involved, the affected section of nail is removed under local anaesthetic and the remaining nail is left intact.
Total nail avulsion
When the whole nail plate is damaged, thickened or repeatedly infected, the full nail may be removed under local anaesthetic.
Chemical matrixectomy
For nails that recur after previous removal, the nail matrix may be treated so that the problematic border does not grow back.
The appointment
Procedures are performed in-office by a Registered Chiropodist using local anaesthetic. Most appointments take 30 to 45 minutes and you walk out afterwards.
- Local anaesthetic administered
- Nail section or plate removed
- Sterile dressing applied
- Aftercare instructions provided
Healing and follow-up
A dressing is worn for the first days and the site is kept clean and dry. A follow-up visit confirms healing and, where required, an antibiotic or further care may be prescribed.
