About Shockwave Therapy

Focused shockwave therapy

Focused shockwave is applied directly over the painful tissue. It gives us another option when rest, hands-on treatment and exercise have not been enough, easing the pain while the tissue recovers.

What is shockwave therapy?

A non-invasive treatment that directs focused pressure waves into injured soft tissue to support healing. It is most often used here for plantar fasciitis and for tendon pain that has not settled with rest and exercise.

How it helps

The pressure waves prompt a healing response in tissue where recovery has stalled, and they improve local blood flow. Where calcification has built up in a tendon, treatment is aimed at that tissue as well. It is used for both recent and long-standing injuries.

What to expect at your appointment

We begin with an examination to identify the areas of pain. Your physiotherapist then uses a handheld device to deliver shockwaves to the target tissue. The procedure is non-invasive, generally well tolerated, and takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Who benefits

It tends to suit long-standing foot and tendon pain, and sports injuries that keep recurring. Because nothing is injected or cut, it is also worth discussing if you would rather avoid an injection or surgery.

What It Treats

Conditions we use shockwave for

Foot and heel

Plantar fasciitis is the condition most frequently treated with shockwave at this clinic, often alongside chiropody care or custom orthotics to address the underlying mechanics.

Tendons

Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and other persistent tendon pain that has not resolved with rest and graded loading alone.

Chronic soft tissue pain

Long-standing pain involving calcification or reduced local circulation, where the tissue requires a stimulus to restart the healing process.

Sports injuries

You do not need to be a competitive athlete. If you are still training around a soft tissue injury that will not settle, shockwave may be appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Recurring heel pain

Shockwave settles the pain, but foot mechanics decide whether it stays settled. Our Registered Chiropodists assess your gait and prescribe orthotics in the same building, so heel pain can be treated from both directions at once.
