Back, Knee and Ankle Pain Linked to Your Feet

Your feet are the foundation for everything above them. When they do not function well, the effects can travel to your ankles, knees, hips and back.

Understanding the condition

About back, knee & ankle pain

Abnormal foot mechanics, such as excessive pronation or a leg-length difference, can change how forces travel up the leg with each step. Over thousands of steps a day this can contribute to shin splints, knee pain, hip pain and lower back discomfort. A biomechanical assessment identifies whether the feet are part of the problem, and our Foot Clinic and rehab teams work together where both are needed.

Common symptoms

  • Knee pain that worsens with walking or running
  • Recurring ankle aches or instability
  • Shin splints
  • Hip or lower back pain after standing
  • Pain that is worse in certain shoes

Common causes

  • Overpronation or flat feet
  • High, rigid arches
  • Leg-length difference
  • Worn or unsupportive footwear
  • Muscle imbalance or weakness

How we treat it

Our approach at Tread Well

01

Gait analysis

We assess how your feet and legs move while you walk, often recording video, to link foot mechanics to your symptoms.

02

Custom orthotics

Orthotics correct faulty mechanics and can reduce strain on the knees, hips and back.

03

Coordinated rehab

Where muscle weakness or joint issues contribute, our physiotherapists and chiropractor work with the Foot Clinic on a shared plan.
